ALL THINGS IN THE UNIVERSE CAN BE CLASSIFIED OR GROUPED ACCORDING TO WHETHER THEY ARE DEAD OR ALIVE. THIS IS THE MOST BASIC GROUPING OF THINGS WE KNOW. CLASSIFICATION IS THE ARRANGEMENT OF THINGS INTO GROUPS, THE MEMBERS OF WHICH HAVE CHARACTERISTICS IN COMMON.

A DICHOTOMOUS KEY IS A TOOL THAT ALLOWS A PERSON TO DETERMINE THE IDENTITY OF ITEMS IN THE NATURAL WORLD, SUCH AS TREES, FLOWERS, MAMMALS, REPTILES, ROCKS OR FISH. THE KEY CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF CHOICES THAT LEAD THE USER TO THE CORRECT NAME OF AN ITEM OR ORGANISM. THE TERM DICHOTOMOUS MEANS "DIVIDED INTO 2 PARTS".

ANIMALS CAN BE DIVIDED INTO TWO MAJOR GROUPS BASED ON THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF A BACKBONE. ANIMALS WITHOUT A BACKBONE ARE CALLED INVERTEBRATES. ANIMALS WITH BACKBONES ARE CALLED VERTABRATES.

INVERTEBRATES GENERALLY HAVE A SOFT BODY WITHOUT BONES OR THEY MAY HAVE AN EXTERNAL (OUTSIDE) SKELETON OR SHELL.
VERTABRATES HAVE A BACKBONE WHICH PROTECTS THEIR SPINAL CORD (MAIN NERVE FROM BRAIN TO BODY)

MAJOR PROJECT

Your teacher will divide you into teams of 4 or five and handout the Animal Classification Group Project. This project has both group activity and an individual research activity for you to complete over the next 3 weeks, using your Lenovo Netbooks. The group poster is to be done as a group. The Group presentation needs to have each group member complete a task before the separate parts are combined. The Individual research piece needs to be completed by youself. As you complete each component hand it in for assessment.
